Joseph Wapner was a retired American judge and television personality. He was best known as the first star of the reality court show, The People’s Court. Joseph Albert Wapner was born to Jewish Parents on November 15, 1919 in Los Angeles, California. His parents were Max and Frannie, and he had a sister named Irene. Wapner attended Hollywood High School. He completed both his Bachelors and JD degrees from the University of Southern California.

CAREER
Wapner served in the United States army during World War II. He received a honorable discharge at the rank of lieutenant. He was also awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star for his services. Wapner began his legal career in the late 1950s. He served 2 years in the Los Angeles Municipal Court followed by 18 years in the Los Angeles County Superior Court. Wapner served as a presiding judge from 1969 to 1970, and as president of the California Judges Association from 1975 to 1976.

Wapner gained further popularity as the first presiding judge on the reality courtroom series, The People’s Court. He held that position from 1981 to 1993 for a total of 12 seasons. His television credits also include Animal Court (1998-2000). Wapner’s star was added to the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2009.

Joseph Wapner died on February 26, 2017 at the age of 97. No official cause of death was reported. Wapner was married to wife ‘Mickey Nebenzahl’ from 1946 until his death in 2017. They had three children, David, Frederick and Sarah. Wapner was about 6ft tall and he was of Russian and Romanian ancestry. He had an estimated net worth of $15 million. He also had a brand of root beer with the soda company, Rocket Fizz.
